Change to Oracle Advanced Security licence meaning some things are now 'free'

There has been a subtle change in the licencing rules when using some of the network security related items with the oracle database - things such as encypting sqlnet traffic for example.

See the note pasted below

"Network encryption (native network encryption and SSL/TLS) and strong
authentication services (Kerberos, PKI, and RADIUS) are no longer part of Oracle
Oracle Database Options
Options and Packs 2-5
Advanced Security and are available in all licensed editions of all supported releases
of the Oracle database."

This is found in the 11.2 licensing guide http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/license.112/e10594.pdf

This can save a lot of hassle if you are using an ssh tunnel to acheive the same thing.

Of course (as with anything related to licences) check with Oracle before you jump in with both feet.....
